Manufacturing Aleppo-soap
Soap from olive-oils can only be manufactured during the cooler month of December thru March. Over the centuries the relativly simple manufacturing process never changed much.In the course of each process about 5 tons of soap are being manufactured. Olive-oil is being stired together with a caustic soda solution in big couldrons. Originally the necessary caustic soda was extracted from the ashes of desert plants, esp.the Salsola Kali.Nowadays industrial caustic soda is being used. The mix is then heated up to about 220 degrees/Celsius and stired until the oilve-oil has been totally reduced to Glyzerine and SodiumHydroxide .Just before the ending of the process essential laurier-oil is being added. Herewith the process of saponification comes to its end. The remainders of the lye is being drained from the cauldron and the soap-solution will be washed thoroughly with fresh water until it is totally free from lye . After the remaining water has been drained as well the still fluid soap will rest over night to cool down.

Making bars of soap
Thereafter the lightgreen, still fluid soap is being spread evenly onto a well prepared floor. After curing for a couple of hours the crude soap is being cut manually into the typicall bars. Each bar well then be stamped with the official(arabic speaking) seal of the factory .

Drying the bars
Before the soap can be offered for sale it needs to mature at least 6-8 month. For this purpose the bars are being piled up manually in the historic arches of Aleppo. This piling up demands quite some time because air needs to flow around every single bar in order to let the surface of the soap become sort of encrusted. The skin of each bar will then oxidize from olive-green to the typical ocher color whilst most of the inside remains green.
